BB racism outrage

Friday, June 8th, 2007

I’ll admit I watched Big Brother again last night - a special extended edition, but only because I’d heard in the day that one of the girls had been kicked out for making a racist comment.

They dragged out the show and made everyone wait until the end of the program to finally show the footage we all wanted to see. It turned out that female ‘Tim Nice But Dim’, Emily, had made a reference to her ‘best house buddy’ Charlie in what seemed to be a act of niave stupidity. The result was that the BB producers removed her from the house.

I really wanted to get online and put this down last night because watching the show, and then the beginning of BBBM had me wanting to put to two cents in too.

Firstly the producers did what they had to in removing her. True. But the whole situation is has been blown in to so much more than it should. I guess the media are sensitive to the subject and it gives them something to write about too.

If you didn’t see the show Emily seemingly innocently (hmmm) called Charlie a word which is commonly used in rap songs and by a certain portion of the black community as term of endearment. The fact that a white girl would use the same expression is where the fuss is being made. The whole situation around the use of this word is something that really gets my goat. Fair enough people can say that they can call themselves what ever they like - it is their choice.

I am from german blood and I’ve often felt I had the right to say what I want about german people as I am one too but I don’t. This is because I would be just as bad as the bigots in perpetuating sterotypes, prejudice and discrimination.

I’m defending her but Emily, it could be said, is a victim of the society she lives in, where these words have been dumbed down and accepted in certain context. Unfortunately she didn’t have the intellegence to realise that this kind of language will never accepted in the mainstream and hopefully never will.

I think the society as whole should bear the responsiblity for yesterday’s incident. However it is Emily who will have to wear the label of racist for a very long time to come.

Big Bro 07 kicks off

Please don’t think I am a Big Brother fan but last night I couldn’t help but get drawn in to the opening night of the new series. The tv happened to be on (I was watching Property Ladder) while I was in the kitchen making dinner. I could here all the screaming etc and was intrigued to see what collection of freaks they were going to wheel out this year.

A whole house of girls! Very clever. Certainly got my attention. Not too bad on the eye apart from the irritating loud mouth woMAN (she had a beard), the scary looking freak in a rainbow crusty jacket who looked like she’d been wearing the same clothes since 1987 and the Germain Greer look a like. God know what they are all like as I didn’t follow it that closely.

I did have the misfortune of seeing the twins enter at the beginning. How awful are they. I’m not one for violence but I could see myself needing to hit something, hard, if I was locked in a room with them. Now there is reason number one why not to watch that crap.

Saying all that, somehow I know I will get sucked in, no doubt due to pressure from my wife, and end up discussing what a bunch of snide bitches they all are when going for a drink on friday after work.

We love to hate it.

Another late night posting…

Somehow it seem the only time I have to add to my blog is late at night. It is currently 1am on a friday night. I’ve had a fairly quiet night. went for a few drinks with Juan and Olly then came home as Yasia’s sister and partner have come down for the weekend.

They headed off to bed fairly early and me and yash watched The Three Amigos for while before Yash decided to hit the sack too. I will be joining her shortly but thought I’d just jump online and express a few views that have been holed up the past week or two. I must admit the Three Amigos had me laughing a fair bit. Don’t know what that says about my sense of humour which has certainly changed as I’ve got older, although it could be the wine.

I’ve friends who’d say it was either a classic or a dud as clear Steve Martin fans. I’ve never really been a fan although he has had his moments. Blowfinger (?) for example was, overall, a terrible film, but I still think it has one of the best comedy moments I’ve ever seen, which amazingly features Eddy Murphy. Personally I don’t think he’s done anything decent for about 20 years but the scene where his charater runs across the freeway is an absolute classic. It had me in tears and make the rest of the film vaguely worth watching. Basically beacuse you need to understand the context too as to apreciate the situation.

Anyway, moving on, I’ll split the rest of my ranting over a series of posts so that they can be suitable listed in the taxonomy.

For those of you who don’t know what taxonomy is,

  • (a) it has nothing to do with tax, that you pay, and
  • (b) it has nothing to do with stuff dead animals.

It is actually to do with the organisation of information, as in at a library, the use of meta tags, and results sorting. Hope that clears things up.

out of touch

Wow. It has been a long while since I last posted anything. If you are reading…
Sorry but I lost my connection here for about a week. All thanks to Homechoice. Their box desided to pack up and I had to wait almost a week for an engineer to turn up and replace it. The funniest thing was we ended up trying three boxes and five remote controls before we could get it working again. Shows what good quality hardware they provide.

Well anyway for now I haven’t got the time to change although it looks like Talktalk offer a better deal. Will sort it out shortly. I looked through all the different providers and it works out that Homechoice or Tiscali as they are now offer a pretty good deal but I’m fed up with the shit service so I’ve got to find something different. I’ve just tried out a freeview box and it picks up a bunch of random channels but I think I’ll switch to that as with Talk talk I can then get a monthly cost of about £20 rather than near £40 with Tiscali and BT. Will update as thing develop.

Aside from all that I’ve just spent most of the week visiting my grand dad in the isle of white. Hence the lack of communication. What a perfect week to take off. The sun has been out non-stop and we’ve really enjoyed the week. Went down to the beach. Amazing how many people were d0wn there. Beautiful although the sea was freezing…

As it goes I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff I want to write about but it is 3:30 am so I best go to bed. That’s wants happens went you’re off line for a week…

If you happen to have a spare 5 minutes I suggest you check out my friend Carl Hubbers’ blog. He is currently ‘on tour’ with his kiwi mates sailing round the Caribbean following his fellow country men as they surprise everyone with their knowledge of cricket, even beating the English in the first game.

Despite spending every day on a boat he has managed to update his blog daily with tales of their tomfoolery. Check it out…

Famous at last!

Just spending the evening fiddling with the site and fixing a few bits and pieces on my other sites - Yash is out with the girls so I’m baby sitting.

I was just looking a Mark Rickets’ blog having had a comment from him following the mention of his plugin and I notice he has quite a few photos on there. I have thought about adding pictures to break up the monologue but so far that has just extended to the picture of Hot Fuzz. I guess the main reason is that I have my flickr account so all my photos get dumped there. I have had plenty of ideas of ‘themes’ of photos. Not least a collection of ‘design and function’ photos of which I have a number. That will come. I had thought I’d integrate them in to some sort of Flash viewer - make it all a bit more exciting. Flash is also a pretty good way of dynamically loading images too.

So the reason for the rambling is that the subject just reminded me that me and Yash are on the cover of a new book! It is published by her company and is on the subject of yoga through pregnancy and once your baby is born. Here is the cover:
